Dean Andersson wrote horror, fantasy, and science
                        fiction with an edge. The
Death Wagon Rolls on By received a Horror

                        was highlighted with a Count

                         Olalla, an
epic vampire film, as a vampire’s favorite book. Bloodsong, a
sword-wielding Scandinavian warrior woman, cut new
ground for heroines in fantasy as she led slaves in
revolt with her rallying cry, "Bloodsong and Freedom!” Publishers Weekly

and I first meet at a DFW Science Fiction convention in
Dallas, TX. We would chat in hallways between panels and
other places, swapping stories and shared life
experiences. I was intrigued when I found out that he had
gone to college after a few years in the Air Force Band as
a percussionist. He wanted to study astronomy to make his
science fiction novels more accurate and graduated summa
cum laude with an Astrophysics degree. Along the
way, I found out that we were both Technical Writers, he
writing mainframe computer software manuals and I
telephone exchange software manuals. Most recently we
would have lunch together,  and I would show him my
theoretical physics research notebooks and discuss my
work. I miss my conversations with Dean and hope that
wherever  he is, he is happy and writing horror,
                      fantasy and science fiction.

                    My
                        friend Dean Andersson's world-line passed into a
different space-time two years ago. I do miss him.
Dean was known in fandom as a horror fiction writer
(though he did have a day job to keep in groceries).

                      I
first met Dean at an Armadillocon sometime in the 1980s
and struck up a palship.` After that we met at
conventions in Dallas (where he lived) , Austin and
                        Aggiecon.
                    We
talked about science fiction and fantasy, but we had a
great time talking about films, movies of all kinds. He
was a great conversationalist, and we had a lot of good
                        times together.

                    ###
Back in the day, when the Twilight Zone and the Outer
Limits were exciting, new shows, the characters of
smart starpeople were more often than not presented as
haughty, cold, self-absorbed, even cruel beings, who
recognized but ignored the needs of 'lesser' beings.
In my travels forward through time, I have
met a few smart starpeople who acted like that. However,
I have been lucky in that I have met many more smart
starpeople who proved to be thoughtful, concerned,
                        caring, every-day beings.
And then, I had the very good fortune to meet
                        C. Dean Andersson. Dean and I were put on panels
together at various science fiction conventions. I, as a
technical editor and writer of science fiction short
stories, was a panelist. Dean, the talented,
professional novelist, working technical writer, and
for-really scientist, was usually the moderator.
As such, Dean could have taken a Star-turn,
but instead, he was invariably kind and sharing with
every person on his panels and with every person in our
audiences. Everybody got a chance to share ideas and
have fun. If someone wanted to talk more after the panel
ended, Dean made time for them.
That was the Dean Andersson I knew. He was a
smart, gifted starperson who gladly, quietly shared what
he had with those around him. In this, Dean walked
lightly on the earth and left it a better place than he
                        found it.
If you missed getting to know C. Dean
Andersson while he was here, it is not too late for you
to get to know something of him now. He left behind some
wonderful novels for you. Read them and meet the writer
who was Dean. When you do, I know you'll be glad you
took the time to get to know that smart, quiet, amazing,
kindly starperson whom I knew as
                          Dean Andersson.
